Charging and Fueling Infrastructure funds include 50% disadvantaged communities
The Federal Highway Administration has announced a key step forward in the nation’s EV charging infrastructure development: the first round of funding for the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) grant program. As a stakeholder in this initiative, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus has aggregated 35 Northeast Illinois municipalities and two counties to apply for a total of $15 million in EV charging grants under the Community program. Half the applicants are disadvantaged communities and all projects will be on public lands. Green Ways 2Go is providing technical support and grant application writing.
The initial round totals $700 million nationally and represents 28% of the federally approved funds. This amount is split between two programs, Community Programs (EV charging stations) and Corridor Programs (EV Charging, and refueling installations for natural gas, propane, and hydrogen, along designated alternative fuel corridors- Interstates).
If successful, the project will install 114 chargers, with 212 charging points, including 27 DC Fast Chargers. This program is a natural outcome of the MMC’s EV Readiness Program, which trains community staff in preparing for the expansion of EV charging expansion. The program incorporates ideas on codes, standards and best practices as well as technical education on EV chargers and infrastructure.
