The Chicago Area Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (MMC) Environmental Committee, met on November 29, 2016 to consider how to best optimize the use of alternative fuels for Chicagoland municipalities as part of the MMC’s Greenest Region Compact 2 to improve transportation sustainability in the region. Green Ways 2Go was there, represented by Tim Milburn, who presented the status of alternative fueling to the participants.
A group of about 40 representatives from regional municipalities and other organizations had met to discuss the realities of converting gasoline and diesel vehicle to use alternative fuels like Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), propane, biodiesel, E85 and Electricity. This included discussions on the costs, types, and costs of alternative fuel vehicles available for municipal applications, costs of infrastructure, current alt fuel locations, incentives including the upcoming VW Consent Decree, the impacts on operation and maintenance, the environmental and economic benefits and many other factors. Leaders from Naperville and the Downers Grove public works department discussed their experiences with CNG and other alternative fuels. Edith Makra, Director of Environmental Initiatives at MMC, discussed using public funds to develop regional public-private retail refueling outlets, specifically to include municipalities
